To the right is a listing of the different volunteer positions available to helping to support asylum seekers in the midcoast area through Midcoast Literacy and other supporting agencies. Your application will be directed to the agency responsible for service you select.
Each listing gives a short description of the type of volunteer work, as well as the length of timeslots you would need to be available to do that type of volunteering, and any training, background checks, or documentation that may be required for each position.
The ‘Midcoast Literacy Tutor’ and ‘Family Support Leader’ positions require volunteers to make a minimum 12-month commitment. The other positions do not require any specific long-term commitments.
When you have decided what volunteer position or positions you are interested in, click the “Next” button at the bottom of this screen to go to the online application form. You will need to repeat a separate online form for each position you are applying for (for example, if you are signing up to be Childcare volunteer and a Headstart Driver, you will need to complete two separate online applications and separate hours available for each).
On the second page of the online application, you will be asked to indicate what your available hours are for that volunteer position. Possible hours for volunteering run from 7:00am to 10:00pm on each day. Please list all timeslots in which you would be prepared to volunteer on a weekly basis – you can change your availability later-on as needed.
VOLUNTEER DRIVER NOTICE: If you volunteer to drive your tutee(s) while performing your commitments as a volunteer for Midcoast Literacy, you will have additional liability protections under Maine law. Your personal auto insurance coverage will be the primary coverage in the event of an accident; however, your liability will be limited to the amount of coverage in your policy.
Drivers will be responsible for ensuring all Maine car seat requirements for children are met if they are transporting children. All the families have the appropriate car seat available for each child.
Childcare volunteers will oversee and help care for the children of asylum seekers from Brunswick Landing during Adult Education English language classes or during individual Midcoast Literacy tutoring sessions. Parents will be present during childcare—you will not be left as the sole caregiver in the building. Volunteers are required to pass background checks.
